The transition to green energy has now become a daily reality. Both hybrid and electric technology present great potential for development. At our company, aiming to capitalize on the new conditions that arise, we seek to pioneer this transition effort by starting a unique project.

The transformation

At Promarine Innovations, we are about to implement a Hybrid and Electric Marine Technology program, which will address a holistic green environmentally friendly development in maritime transport.

This will include:

  • The conversion of the conventional shipyard into a “green shipyard” with zero carbon footprint through bilateral agreements with green energy providers and the application of energy efficiency models.
  • The transformation of our company’s fleet into a fleet of electric vessels through cooperation and co-financing with a specialized group.
  • Simultaneously, the exploitation of the possibilities for integrating maritime transport with electromobility. This initiative will establish our company as a strong ally of the environment. The electric hybrid vessels, in this case passenger ships and Ro-Ro vessels, constitute a structural element of the proposal, as they represent one of the main recipients of the energy produced by the Renewable Energy Source units of the islands. These vessels will be charged either from the power supply of the respective port or from our floating green energy system.

Green Applications and Sustainability

Our concept includes the construction and operation of two electric / hybrid vessels through collaboration with the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of NTUA, a Greek shipyard of suitable scale – e.g., ProMarine Shipyards S.A. – and a specialized LNG engine manufacturing company – e.g., Wärtsilä.

Within this framework, a small liquefied natural gas (LNG) unit and bunkering services could be developed at a central port or a strategically eligible island. The construction of the LNG unit is expected to play a significant role in any case. Another source of meeting needs could be desalination units (using reverse osmosis technology) on central islands with high demand.

Despite the above, it is worth mentioning that the proposed coupling of energy from Renewable Energy Sources with maritime transport largely addresses the very important problem of the “balance” between electricity production from non-controllable Renewable Energy Sources (wind and photovoltaic) and demand. This fact has been recognized both by consumers at the local level and by reliable potential recipients of different levels of absorption security.

In conclusion, Promarine Innovations will be the operator of the energy production and distribution control system (electricity, LNG, and H2) in cooperation with a specialized company, and also the coordinator of the project in conjunction with a specialized research institution (e.g., NTUA, CERTH, etc.).
