Shipyard for hybrid tugs (concept)

Our company, recognizing the global need to combine the utility of tugboats with the use of green energy, aspires to take a leading role in these developments. In this project, Promarine will establish a production line for conventional and hybrid tugboats. The first vessel, to be built by our company, will be 36 meters long and will initially be used for chartering until it is sold, something expected to occur within the first five years.

HYBRID TUGS

Presenting how this project will be carried out, we must mention our partners. The project will be undertaken by the newly established company Promarine Yachts S.A. subcontracting will be handled by Promarine Shipyards, and project management will be carried out by Promarine Shipmanagement & Co S.A. These companies, all recently established, share a common major shareholder and founder with many years of industry experience, Mr. Michalis Spanopoulos, who remains one of the two equal owners of the Spanopoulos Group. It should be noted that our group collaborates with the largest companies in the world that rely on tugboats to service their fleets.

Our company acknowledges that greenhouse gas emissions are a major issue today, while we also fully understand the following: Vessels engaged in inland navigation have significant room for optimization due to the relatively outdated engine technology they employ. This is primarily due to the durability of their structure and propulsion systems, which allow for a long lifespan. However, due to the “right to continuity,” these vessels often do not meet reasonable emission standards.

Green Applications and Sustainability

The design department of Promarine Innovations (Athens) is preparing the design of a push tugboat for the Athens – Piraeus area, featuring an innovative power unit and energy conscious concept. Promarine aims for regional transport to be conducted using battery-powered electric propulsion. 

On the other hand, long-range regional transport will be supported by fuel cells to extend operational range. Therefore, by using renewable energy to charge the batteries, the vessel will operate entirely as a “zero emission ship.”

"In Practice"

Our company has made the decision to proceed vigorously with the completion of this project, naturally taking into account both the needs and potential challenges that may arise in practice.

In any case, hybrid propulsion / towing brings many positive impacts in terms of operational costs. The high flexibility of such systems leads to optimized engine performance, as internal combustion engines can run for longer periods under high and stable loads. By reducing their operating hours, we also reduce maintenance costs and extend engine lifespan.

Finally, regarding financial aspects and especially capital expenditures, the drop in battery prices and related technology significantly reduces the total cost of a hybrid tugboat, bringing it almost in line with the cost of a conventional version.
